When I first read your by-line, I thought you were telling me you were going to stay in the Army as a Bradley Master Gunner, as in the Fighting Vehicle. But I see you've chosen something much harder. :-)

Yes, I totally agree that it is possible and that the rate is WAY to high. Yes, 30% is CRAZY. And no, no one should hide behind any excuse if it means that patient care is suffering, especially when it comes to births. I am in total agreement with all of that. I just wanted to say that those delivering at a birth center are a select population- all having prenatal care and meeting other standards of health to deliver there. I think a hospital will always therefore trend higher- BUT, not that much higher! I think ideally we would see our birth centers hovering around that 4% and respectable hospital providers, like Dr. Bradley, would come in around 5% to 6%. Did that make sense? I don't see there being a big difference, just don't think it's realistic for them to be the same.

Thanks for the comments! Dr. Bradley had a c-section rate of less than 5% during his almost 30 year practice which included "high-risk" hospital patients. I don't think hospitals can use high-risk as an excuse and, wowsers, 30% is ridiculous! Birth center or hospital, I wouldn't accept care from anyone with a c-section rate higher than 5-10% and unfortunately these days that's pretty hard to find.

Hey Alyssa! Your mom told us on Saturday that you were doing this. I think it's awesome. I'm a bit of a natural birth advocate myself. ;) (Though I'm a little partial to just doing to just doing it all at home now. :)) I've been looking into getting my NCBE certification but for now am just going to become a LLL Leader since there aren't any in Ontario.

Anyway, just wanted to tell you I think it's so cool that you're doing this!!
